The Importance of Mother Tongue in Education

The usage of mother tongue in the elementary educational system has a great impact on a child’s overall development during the initial years of schooling and education. Education in native language has a highly crucial part to play in the overall social, cultural, psychological, cognitive, physical and emotional growth and development process of children. This is because acquiring education in one’s first language makes things easier to understand, resulting in higher memory retention rates leading to higher grades, success ratio and lesser chances of failure.

We are living in the times where the globalization has made everything accessible, making the international education system look more valuable than our own. Therefore, following the trend, our own education system focuses on acquiring education in international and foreign languages rather than our own first language. There are uncountable advantages of acquiring education in mother tongue. However, most people completely ignore or they remain totally unknown of the importance regarding acquiring the education system in a child’s first language.

  1. Most parents ignore the fact that gaining language proficiency in the first language is as important as gaining language proficiency in the second language for their child. They communicate with their child in the second language so that they could be proficient at it, which leads to the fact that their child gains complete fluency in neither first language nor the second language.
  2. Having a strong grip on mother tongue makes the learning of the foreign languages easier. Being proficient at mother tongue means having a good vocabulary. When the language skills of the native language are good it automatically assists the learning of a foreign language at school by creating cognitive connections. Moreover, it also leads to a better understanding of the curriculum.
  3. Fostering mother tongue means a lot. As a matter of fact, the native language tends to build one’s personal, emotional, cultural, social heritage and identity. Moreover, it not only improves the localised communication skills but also improve and enhance cognitive thinking and creativity. Furthermore, it makes the grammar understanding of any language intuitively easier.
  4. Mother tongue is one’s social and cultural identity and heritage. Native language is said to define one’s personality and build one’s positive self-concept, which leads to ease in communication with family and friends. Generally speaking, most people find it hard to communicate with one another due to the fact that they do not find anything in common or the inability to connect to one another, which creates several communication gaps.
