3 Ways to Use Timers to Encourage Homework and Chore Completion

Getting kids to do chores is the most common family argument across the world. It does not matter which part of the world you belong to, there are certain behaviors that children exhibit regardless of geographical location. Most of the parents struggle with this common problem and cannot find an appropriate solution. In order to solve this issue, we have to understand that every child is different and there is no universal solution to approach a particular problem when it comes to children. However, there are some tips which you can use to customize a schedule for your children.

Using timetable or timers is the most efficient way to make sure that your child is not wasting time or dallying doing a chore. Most of the preschools in Dubai and best nurseries in Dubai use the timer method as an effective tool for teaching. But you have to understand that children don’t like doing chores because of the same reasons as adults because they are boring. Here are some ways which you can use to encourage homework and chore completion.

Set a time limit:

The first thing you should do is to get a timer which is visually pleasant and is simple enough so that the children will know when the time is up. Give them a time limit to complete a task whether it is homework or a house chore. Make sure they know the importance of completing the task on time. You can make it more exciting by making a game out of it for example, ask your child “let’s see if you can do this in 20 minutes” or do something of your own and say “let’s see which one of us complete their task first” by doing this you will give your child a chance to find excitement in mundane tasks.

Add incentives:

Adding incentives is the most successful method for stimulating the desired behavior. For this, you have to add a bonus for every task achieved. Ask your child what movie he/she will like to watch after completing their homework or give them their favorite snack as a treat after they helped you in the house chores or after they complete their assigned tasks. Make sure they know that whatever they are getting in return is because of their good behavior to ensure the continuation of said behavior. However, it is not necessary that you will get the desired results because as I have said above, every child is different and may react differently in the same situations.

Use a timer for the transition of activities:

Children often show difficulty in the transition of activity. If they are watching a movie or playing a game then it is nearly impossible to get them to study after that. To make this easier, the parents can put up a visual timer so that the children can know how much time they have until the next activity. If they are involved in a fun activity then they will not make that much fuss if the next activity on schedule is studying because they had the timer as a constant reminder of the transition. Best British Preschool in Dubai often uses this method to ensure an efficient transition.
